Baby Shower!

Truthfully, Grace feels incredibly guilty that it's taken her so long to do this. Ever since Mini arrived and told her that she was having a baby, Grace has had it in her head that she'll need to put on a party for her. It's got to be difficult, doing this away from her Mum and from all the rest of their friends, and she thinks that just about anything that can make all of this just a little bit better is worth doing.

While she'd originally planned to do this in their hut, by now it's probably too far to ask Mini to walk, so she's settled on the rec room instead. It's definitely done well in a pinch, and Grace has decorated it the best she can, with pink streamers and bows. She's spent the entire morning baking and decorating small cookies and cupcakes with Kurt's help.

By the time people have started arriving, she's become convinced that this will be nothing less than perfect.

[Dated to Sunday 9/16, in the rec room.]

He's come armed with poetry.

True, this likely isn't the venue of antidote that Hector had ever imagined (he doesn't even suppose he knows what variety of poison this falls under), but it's the best he could manage because the clothes box has been unresponsive about baby clothes and so he's brought a book of Keats to the party and knows it's possibly the worst gift in history.

Still, at least he's tried.

"As if I could be kept away," he jokes, handing over the wrapped set of books, hoping that Grace might ferret them away at some point to Mini. It's not that he's scared of her, it's just that...well, one sharp tongue is about all he can deal with right now and Dakin's using up all his energy.

He focuses on the good. The kiss to his cheek, the presence of Grace, the mood of the party. "You look lovely," he says seriously, sliding his hands down her hips to hold on lightly.

What is it with me and social events I feel a little awkward about? Is it me? I'm kind of the common link, here, maybe I'm just an awkward person. That seems about right. Still, I'm not going to let it put me off. It's a pregancy shower for someone not much older than I am, which is alarming not just because teen pregnancy but also because the thought in general of pregnancy has turned out to be deeply terrifying for me.

But, no, okay, I'm going to do the supportive thing, because it's clearly the right thing. Judging away isn't going to do a thing to help anyone, so instead, I attend the baby shower, I bring a present -- I took a couple of the ubiquituous radios that are about and hacked them into a lo-fi baby monitor -- and I will have a cupcake.

The cupcakes aren't really a stretch. I mean, none of it except maybe getting the monitor to work were (although that was its own kind of fun), but the cupcakes especially.

"You're not crying," Reggie said, regarding Jessica carefully as if he were missing something right in front of his face. "Nobody is. I don't know why, I've never been to one of these before but maybe because it's kind of a girly party, but I expected there to be crying, had my shoulder all ready for it. Excessive hugging at the very least. Aren't babies supposed to be a big deal to girls?" His disappointment was palpable, but he was trying to view the whole thing as a learning experience.

Besides, there were still cupcakes.
notaparker: ([pb] OH YOU)

[personal profile] notaparker 2012-09-18 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
There still might be, but it'd probably because Mini's told someone off for a terrible gift rather than anything else. Man, I hope that's not me. I try not to cry more than Peter, it'd feel like an embarrassing gender commentary if I did.

Much like the one Reggie just made, actually.

"Babies are new tiny people, they should be a big deal to everyone," I say. "New tiny people! And even though that does kind of make me want to hug someone, we're not hugging, just because of that comment."

"But we might have if I hadn't said that?" Reggie was quick to clarify, pointing with his cupcake-free hand to demonstrate the seriousness of his question.

Kurt had arrived earlier to help Grace with the baking and decorations and Blaine had promised he'd arrive before the start of the party gift in hand, always happy to participate in any form of celebration. He doesn't know Mini particularly well, but Grace is lovely and anywhere Kurt wants him, Blaine is all too happy to be.

Not wanting to call too much attention to himself, Blaine takes a seat in the corner, the gift box rested on his lap as he watches others wander in, each of them familiar now even if he doesn't know them all particularly well.

Content, he smiles faintly, waiting for the festivities to begin.

In Disney's version of Sleeping Beauty, which was probably one of Kurt's first exposures to the type of prince he wanted in his life, the baby Aurora was welcomed with gifts from her guardian fairies— beauty, song, and a protective spell. While Kurt would gladly bestow any of the above on Mini's child, his magic isn't quite that potent or strong, but he does know of something that he can instill in the child as soon as he meets it.

The gift of fashion.

While it's not necessarily a piece that the baby can wear right away, Kurt's cobbled together a small blazer for once the first few months are under the belt, the inside of the garment lined with the softest silk he could coax from the clothing box. Wrapped not in paper, but in still more cloth, Kurt puts the present aside on the pile before going about helping Grace with the rest of the preparations. By the time the guests start arriving, he's a little tired, but more than excited enough to make up for it, biting down on his lower lip as he glances about, hoping for the best.

It's kind of remarkable, after all. A baby being born soon. While Kurt does think that Mini's a bit young to have to be responsible for so much, he can't deny that there's a twinge in his heart all the while. Babies are adorable. Amazing. He thinks, just maybe, someday down the line he might like to have one.

It would be a fucking lie if Mini tried to pretend like she doesn't still have mixed feelings about all this.

Not the baby. That, she's been sure of for months; there isn't a force in the world that could make her willingly give up her daughter, even if thinking of the baby that way is still terrifying. Everything else, though, just leaves her feeling awkward and unsure. She's the size of a house now and she feels like she's going to pop at any second, and it's kind of irritating to have a party in her honor when she's pretty sure she looks gross. All that stuff people spout about pregnancy being beautiful is absolute bullshit. It's messy and frustrating and she's a living fucking incubator, which she's really, really ready to stop being, because she's relatively sure she's been pregnant for something like nine hundred months now. There've been about a dozen times these last few weeks she was absolutely sure she was going into labor, what with contractions, but they never get any closer together and how the fuck is she supposed to know anyway? It's not like she's done this before.

But then there's everything else. Grace is here. Grace is throwing her a party and, even though she doesn't really have much in the way of friends, there are people here because they care about her or something. She's not sure what to feel about that, except to think it's really kind of nice. Like, okay, she can't really get up and wander around, because she's not quite feeling up to it, but she takes up residence on one of the couches, sitting with her legs propped up. Even that's kind of nice, because it means people just bring her cupcakes and things, which she could really get used to. As someone else approaches, she gives a little wave.

It's been a very long time since Jason thought he was getting family, but in those few, harried weeks, he'd pictured something very much like this when it came time. Lux, surrounded by all the friends that she deserved, huge but happy. It makes his throat ache around a phantom lump, but he comes forward at Mini's wave, a carefully wrapped parcel in his hands.

"Do I give you this now?" he asks, summoning a nervous smile.

It's kind of a weird feeling, sitting here when there's a party going on. Mini's used to being in the thick of things, and even now, whenever something halfway decent comes on the jukebox, she dances in her seat as best she can. It isn't the same, though. Having someone join her makes it feel a little more like it should be.

"Ooh, a present," she says, grinning as she gestures to the couch next to her, what little she hasn't stretched out on. That part of it all is exciting. The gifts are only sort of for her, but she kind of likes that, getting to see all her baby's first presents. "Well, I will take those anytime. Come, sit."

"Well, well, well. You are positively glowing," Reggie said, sidling over to the mom-to-be with his never-fail grin. He wasn't always entirely sure how to act around Mini when she wasn't getting him riled up, not having a whole lot in the way of experience with teen pregnancy. For the most part, he just ignored that particular aspect of her, but that was what the shower was all about. "Glowing, that's the right word, right, for when a pregnant chick is still really hot?"

Mini's head drops back against the headrest. "Oh, my god," she says under her breath. It isn't really all that surprising, hearing that kind of ridiculous shit from Reggie, but it amazes her that he manages to remain this ridiculous so consistently.

Actually, it's kind of nice to hear when she feels like she might be some kind of a submarine or something, but she's not about to admit it.

"That's one word for it, doofus," she says, glancing at him again. "You know 'hot' still works, right? There's not a special category for me just because I'm having a baby."

"Is it present time?" I say. "What am I talking about, it's always present time."

This is both true and also, if you are me, deeply funny for excessively dorky reasons. Because... present. As in, the present. That's clever! But this party isn't about me so I'm not going to point out that was clever because it's probably just clever to me.

"And thus: present," I say, holding out the wrapped parcel. "It's, uh, it's not exactly pretty, but it's functional." I couldn't really do 'pretty' out of a pair of radios taken apart and reassembled into a unidirectional baby monitor. It doesn't have great range, either. I'll need to warn her about the range.

And possibly about what it is, since it basically looks like a couple of pulled apart and soldered together again radios. Which is, you know, what it is.

[personal profile] orlovemeback 2012-09-18 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, I wasn't really expecting pretty anyway," Mini says, reaching for the gift. "Thanks." It isn't even just because it's from Jessica either. It's just that, in a place like this, it's not like she can make up a list or join a registry and send everyone off to get her really cute baby clothes from Burberry that she's picked herself or anything. Functional isn't really her favorite way to describe anything, but when it's for the baby, she can't really complain either.

Unwrapping it carefully, she eyes the weird radio thing with equal measures of confusion and suspicion. "Functional in what way exactly?"

"Then I'll take the vanilla," Mini says with a grin, reaching out to do so. "Thank you, darling. You and Kurt really went all out."

Of course, given that this is a party for her baby and, by extension, her, she figures that's only right. How many more opportunities will any of them have to throw a baby shower anytime soon? It doesn't seem too likely in the near future.

For as long as Reggie could remember, a baby shower was just something that meant his parents were going to be out of the house for a few hours and he had free reign. The idea of going to one for someone his own age was weird, to say the least, but that didn't mean he was about to turn down an invite to a party full of girls, where half of the other guys weren't even into them. Either way, while it was turning out to be a little more low-key and a lot more pink than the sort of environment he tended to thrive in, he was digging it. He'd gone so far as to pull his patented trick of turning up early enough for it to look like he'd helped out but late enough to not actually have to do anything. Heck, thanks to an impromptu portrait session with that weird guy who was always cleaning the Compound, he'd even brought a gift.

"Hey, you know what's an awesome name for a baby? Reggie. You know, just saying."
